Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy or Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a proven treatment for chronic soft tissue injuries and several bone conditions.
It is a non-invasive, non-electrical high energy sound that travels through the body focusing on the target spots using a hand-held probe. The target spots are the myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions.
In treating the condition, the shock waves produce a swift increase in blood circulation in the target area breaking down the fibrous scar tissue built over time more evident in chronic conditions.
The scar tissue is a non- elastic tissue that prevents normal mobility and function. In doing such, it weakens the surrounding unaffected tissues causing further damage and pain. By breaking the fibrous scar tissue and increasing the blood circulation rate, cell regeneration and other reparative processes commence thereby healing the body.
Shockwave Therapy And Your Body’s Reaction
The shockwave therapy produces quick results. There a number of research to support its efficiency and more are still being conducted. With shockwave therapy, your body positively reacts. The following are some of the positive reactions of your body towards the treatment.
New blood vessel formation
New blood vessels are formed in replacement of the capillary microruptures caused by the application of acoustic waves. This is important to start and maintain the repair processes of the damaged tissue.
Stimulation of collagen formation
Collagen is important for the repair processes in the damaged myoskeletal and ligamentous structures. Shockwave therapy increases procollagen synthesis.
Disintegration of calcified fibroblasts
Microtears and other trauma to the tendon can cause calcium build-up. Shockwave therapy breaks the calcified fibroblasts.
Release of trigger points
Trigger points are the cause of back, shoulder, neck, and limbs pain. Through shockwave therapy, the calcium pump is unblocked and the metabolic crisis in the myofilaments is reversed releasing the trigger points.
